Mining runs in Tsvangirai family

HARARE Mining and the family of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai are like two sides of the same coin. He and his elder brother, Casper, who runs a thriving small-scale gold mining company just outside Kwekwe, seem to know the industry like the back of their hands.

The Zimbabwean on Sunday caught up with Casper Tsvangirai at the just ended international mining conference. I am here to contribute my views to the growth of the industry and learn more about modern methods of mining involving things such as occupational and environmental safety, he said.

Casper Tsvangirai has been instrumental in advocating for the increased support of small scale-miners in Zimbabwe. He is the organising secretary of small-scale operators under the Zimbabwe Gold Miners and Millers Association (Zigmma) in the Midlands and Mashonaland West provinces.

He has been at the forefront of urging local banks to offer loans to local miners to boost production and curb illegal mining in the two areas.

His brother Morgan began his political career in the mining environment of Bindura, where he was working at Trojan Mine. He spent ten years at the mine, rising from plant operator to plant supervisor.

He also shaped his trade union and political career in the mining environment; first as the branch chairman of the Associated Mine Workers Union before being elected into the executive of the National Mine Workers Union. He later rose through the ranks to become the secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU).
