Muchauraya went to the police yesterday in the company of his lawyer , Chris Ndlovu of Ndlovu and Gonese associates . Officers from the PISI section recorded a statement from him and subsequently detained him. It is alleged that Muchauraya assaulted one Precious Zinyemba with a stick at Mutare Central Police station and she sustained a broken arm . This followed allegations that she stole US$10 000, several Rands and Pounds from Jullian Mbiri, an MDC activist.
What is amazing is that the police officers did not arrest the MP at the scene , when it is alleged to have happened and the complainant only made a report two weeks later. Sources close to this reporter revealed that the two police officers who did not apprehend him at the scene were charged under the police act and one of them was made to pay a fin e while the other was instructed to write a report.
His arrest comes in the wake of renewed persecution of MDC MPs and ministers. At least seven MPs and ministers are facing trumped-up charges. The MDC believes that these continued unjustified and political motivated arrests and charges cannot be taken lightly, especially against the background of renewed violence and persecution of MDC leaders, MPs and members.
