Protest against police brutality in Botswana

police_beating_junosBULAWAYO - More than 40 Zimbabweans held a demonstration against police brutality at the office of Botswanas President Ian Khama on Monday.
The group marched through central Gaborone and handed over a petition at state house.

Spokesperson of the protesters, Cosmas Chandaengera, who said he was among the victims of police brutality, explained: I do not think the president of this country knows what we are going through; we are being treated like dogs. We have decided to march to his office to raise our concerns over the continued torture and harassment of Zimbabwean immigrants by police.

Chandaengera said he was now paralysed and had to use crutches after police shot him in the back over false allegations of stealing jeans from a Chinese businessman.

Police should take responsibility for their actions. They shot me for no apparent reason. After that I didnt receive any compensation, Chandaengera said.

A Zimbabwean family in Botswana is also filing a lawsuit against the police in the countrys high court after their son was shot and killed. Twenty-five-year-old Edson Mark Gumbo was shot to death while walking to work early in the morning last March. He was unarmed and was caught in the gunfire after the night patrol officers were called to the scene of suspected house-breaking.
