Robber on the run nabbed in Zim

prisons_zimBULAWAYO,- A suspected Zimbabwean armed robber accused of committing at least three crimes in one day in South Africa has been arrested in Zimbabwe, and efforts are being made to take him back to the country to face various charges, police said yesterday.

The suspect, Hlomani Villard Nyoni, is said to have evaded arrest in South Africa for various crimes, among them housebreaking, car-jacking, attempted murder, armed robbery and robbery crimes committed before fleeing to Zimbabwe’s most remote areas.

However, luck ran out for him when the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) pounced on him following a tip-off.

Police Commanding Officer for Matabeleland Province, Assistant Commissioner Sithulisiwe Mokuele, confirmed Nyoni was arrested last week in the province.

“After receiving a tip-off, our detectives raided his home area and arrested him at a house in Jambezi. Although no firearms were found on him, the suspect admitted during interrogation that he had committed three armed robberies in Yeoville, Johannesburg, on August 8 this year.

“Nyoni and his gang allegedly robbed Shell Garage, Chicken Republic and motorists and guest houses before fleeing to Zimbabwe,” said Asst Comm Mokuele.

She said prior to his escape to Zimbabwe, the accused allegedly robbed a Johannesburg motorist of his car and R9 000 while in the company of three other suspects.

“He then fled and later crossed into Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge-Musina border-post without using a passport,” said Asst Comm Mokuele.

She said Nyoni allegedly exchanged gunfire with South African police in one of the robberies that took place in August in Johannesburg after hijacking a Toyota Corolla.
