Tanzania: EAC needs to expand roles for regional market

tanzania_pm_mizengo_pindaTHE Prime Minister, Mizengo Pinda (pictured), has said there was a need for the East African Community member states to join forces to create a bigger market for member states' products.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Premier Pinda made the call yesterday, when he visited Kenyan Prime minister Raila Ondiga at his office in Nairobi, Kenya.

The prime minister who is in Kenya for a two-day official visit, said there was a need to join forces of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) to create a bigger market where member states would sell its products.

Regarding trade between Tanzania and Kenya, Mr Pinda challenged Tanzanian business community to exploit opportunities provided by the East African Community which their Kenyan peers have used to the maximum.

Speaking earlier, Kenyan Prime Minister Odinga, said the current situation in his country was poor, especially relating to food security because of droughts.

Mr Odinga said, the Kenyan government faced three critical problems this time around which included the effects of 2007 post- election violence which had contributed significantly to food shortages.

He said despite the droughts and post-election violence, Kenya was also struggling to contain effects of the global recession.

Mr Odinga, however, was optimistic that early rains which were expected late this month along the coastal areas might help address the problems of drought and food shortages in his country.

Later in the day, Premier Pinda was expected to visit the Kenya Agriculture Research Institute and later meet Tanzanians living in Nairobi.
