Veld fires destroy 3,000 hectares

veldfiresHWANGE - More than 3,000 hectares of land was destroyed by veld fires that broke out at Hwange National Park in Matabeleland South last week. An official at the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority said two fires broke out at the Mambanje area in the eastern border of the park, and another in the Matetsi area through Sinamatela.

The official said 1,000 hectares was destroyed in Mambanje and 2,000 in Matetsi, but no-one had been reported injured, no property was lost and no animals killed. Teams from the Sinamatela and main camp and their families helped put out the fire. They spent all night putting out the fire and, as I speak, all of them are very exhausted, said the official. Matabeleland North has in the past week experienced outbreaks of veld fires that destroyed property and vast areas of grazing land.
