ZCTU president, Lovemore Matombo, told CAJ News on Wednesday that the country’s largest labour body was rallying behind workers’ grievances hence it supported their intentions to embark on a nationwide strike that could paralyze government operations. Civil servants are currently being paid about US$170 per month.

“Workers are earning paltry salaries, but worst of all, they are exposed to some poor working conditions, which is unacceptable. “AS ZCTU, we give workers our unlimited support towards this worthy cause. The government should adjust the workers’ salaries, otherwise industrial action will be the solution to meaningful dialogue,” said Matombo. He admitted that Zimbabwe was still battling to meet its obligations, especially in the areas of education, health, agriculture and manufacturing, but stressed that the government should increase its workforce’s remuneration nonetheless.

The ZCTU boss comments come a week after the Zimbabwe Teachers Association (Zimta), Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) and several civil servants threatened mass industrial action to press for improved remuneration and working conditions
