ZCTU calls protest march

lovemore_matomboHARARE The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions will soon engage in a massive march to force unscrupulous employers to review the prices in their shops, said its head Lovemore Matombo (pictured).

Speaking to The Zimbabwean, the leading trade unionist said that prices in the shops were shocking and unjustifiable. A loaf of bread, for example, costs three times more in Zimbabwe than in South Africa. While he did not specify the date, Matombo said that it would be soon. He warned that it would be a wake up call to the responsible authorities who had frustrated the labour organization on its attempt to hold an indaba over the pricing structure.

We have tried to have tripartite talks but with little success as the dates have been constantly postponed by the employers, he said. While shops are now well-stocked, the prices are still fourfold the prices in other countries such as Zambia. Matombo said that the labour organization was not anti-the inclusive government but would continue to protect the rights of workers. Whatever we do should not be seen as being against the inclusive government, life is far much better this year than it was last year.
