The full body scanner that inventors see as a way to speed-up boarding will show the passenger in a naked state, providing a black-and-white outline of any breast enlargements, false limbs, piercings, and the passengers private parts.
Officials say it enables staff to instantly spot any hidden weapons or explosives, while the black and white image of the naked traveller will only be seen by one officer in a remote location before it is deleted.
Travelers who might not want to be scanned because of the graphic nature of the images can refuse to undergo the virtual strip search, opting for the traditional “pat down” search instead.
The X-ray style scanner, made by RapiScan Systems is in use at Manchester airports terminal 2 as part of a pilot project and is expected to be rolled out in other airports across the U.K.
