In a letter to Chiundura-Tavengwa, seen by The Zimbabwean, Chombo said the Chiundura area was temporarily without a chief. You are suspended from the position of Chief Chiundura following serious allegations of murder that you and your wife are facing, reads part of Chombos letter.
According to court documents, sometime in March Chiundura-Tavengwa and his wife, Nellie Chiundura-Tavengwa, severely assaulted a mentally ill man with knobkerries and steel rods after finding him in their kitchen at night. The man sustained serious head injuries.
The Chief and his wife allegedly dumped him about 500m from their homestead. He was discovered by some passers-by the following morning and rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Chiundura-Tavengwas murder trial is expected to begin at the Gweru regional magistrates court next week. The couple are on US$10 bail each.
