Chief vandalises borehole

HWANGE - Police in Lupane in Matebeland North have arrested a traditional chief who vandalised a local borehole saying that MDC supporters should not fetch water from it.

Chief Hendwana Ncube was arrested last week after vandalizing a borehole at Sizipile area as a way of punishing villagers in his neighbourhood whom he accused of being MDC supporters. According to police officers based at Lupane police station Chief Ncube, with the help of Zanu (PF) youths and war veterans, last week went to a borehole at ward 23 in Sizipile and destroyed the borehole and drainage pipes.

The chief is still in our custody and he will appear in court soon charged with malicious injury to property. Our investigations are still going on and we are yet to arrest his accomplices who are war veterans and Zanu (PF) youths, said a senior police office based at Lupane police station. Some villagers accused the chief of being violent and also for always punishing MDC supporters in his area. Sometimes he goes door by door demanding maize and money from villagers whom he suspects are MDC supporters. He even acts like a Zanu (PF) chairperson for the area, said Bheki Nyoni, a villager.

Another villager said: During last year violent June 27 presidential elections Chief Ncube was even conducting terror campaign against opposition supporters staying at Zanu (PF) torture bases.
