But, COSAFA have , through their chief executive Sue Destombes announced the prize money for the teams.
Destombes disclosed yesterday to The Zimbabwean that the winners of the Sunday final in Harare will go home with ZAR300 000, with the beaten finalists receiving ZAR150 000 as a consolation prize.
The team which wins the Third/Fourth Play-Off on Saturday will be ZAR100 000 richer, with the fourth-placed side in this year’s competition to get ZAR75 000.
The losing quarter-finalists, namely Angola, Botswana, Namibia and Malawi, each go home with ZAR30 000, while the teams eliminated in the group stages, Comoros, Lesotho, Mauritius, Swaziland and Seychelles, will earn ZAR25 000 each.
It makes for a total purse for the competition of ZAR870 000, putting the 2009 COSAFA Senior Challenge among the richest team tournaments on the African continent.
Individual players will also claim prize-money, with ZAR7 500 each going to the Player of the Tournament, Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Top Goal scorer of the Tournament. Warriors striker Cuthbert Malajila is set to scoop the top goal scorer award. He has already netted three goals in the tournament so far.
