International ban on Zim freight industry lifted

cargoHARARE - Zimbabwe's freight industry has been given the green light to resume international cargo operations, in a move expected to increase business activities.

The move was approved at the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations’ Annual Congress in Geneva last week where it was resolved that Zimbabwe’s cargo industry was on a recovery path.

Shipping and Freight Forwarders’ Association Chairman, Juren Mutemeli, said the arrangement would broaden the revenue generation for local operators. “The initiative is actually expected to increase revenue inflows, a move that will benefit the local industry as well as broadening the scope of business activities,” he said.

The cargo industry was suspended from international business activities seven years ago after experiencing depressed trading volumes. However, Mutemeli said the restoration of stable economic conditions had improved business activities. The industry is exploring markets in the COMESA region following the introduction of a Customs Union that seeks to remove barriers to trade.
