He was rushed to Bindura Hospital and admitted into Intensive Care after a marauding gang, allegedly led by self-styled war veteran Jacob Chiripanyanga, descended on his. The gang accused Tauro of being an MDC supporter and uprooted his entire crop in a bid to provoke him. Chiripanyanga is said to have charged towards Tauro taunting him for supporting the MDC and hitting him several times on the head with an iron bar.

Tauro said one of them suddenly struck him with an object from behind, falling to the ground and prompting the rest of them to join in assaulting him. He was hit across the head several times.

“While on the ground I was kicked all over the body until I fell unconscious for one and half hours,” he said. Gladys Guvheya and Tariro Benhura were also caught in the attack, and suffered serious injuries.

It is understood that one of the assailants armed with an axe hit his head. The wound required 18 stitches.

The case was reported at Bindura Police Station. A provincial spokesman confirmed the report but referred further questions to police chief spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena in Harare.

Incensed by the brutality of the attack the farm workers descended on the “war veterans” laying siege to the farm and attempted to chase them off, escalating tensions at the farm. No members of the gang had been picked up for questioning at the time of going to press.

The farm, according the owner, has not been listed for compulsory acquisition. At the time of going to press the illegal occupiers were at the farm pegging land to be prepared for this season’s cropping.
