Kenyan robbed at knifepoint

car_robbedMASVINGO -- A Kenyan motorist was robbed of his car, a Mitsubishi Chariot, R6000 and cell phones by a gang of four highway robbers along the?Beitbridge-Masvingo road, police said. Chief Superintendent?Hosiah Mukombero in charge of police in Beitbridge district said the incident occurred last Tuesday at around 11pm at a bushy area a few kilometers outside the border

He said: The complainant who is a Kenyan national was in the company of a Zimbabwean friend and they were travelling from the border post where they had just completed clearing the vehicle with ZIMRA.

“On their way the car developed a puncture and when they disembarked so that they could replace the tyre, four suspects armed with knives descended on the two men and robbed them . they then grabbed the car keys and drove off at high speed leaving the complainants stranded.”

A report was made to the police, leading to the recovery of the car which the robbers, who remain at large, had apparently dumped after making their gateway.

We are now investigating the incident and we are also appealing to anyone with information that might lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact us,” Mukombero said.

Of late there has been an increase in the number of armed robberies along the major highways linking Beitbridge, Masvingo and Bulawayo.

A number of unsuspecting travellers continue to fall prey to armed robbery syndicates operating along the highways and targeting motorists.

Last week police in Matabeleland South and Masvingo provinces conducted a joint three-day operation along the Beitbridge-Masvingo road. The exercise was aimed at curbing criminal activities along the route as well as alerting motorists to the dangers of stopping by lay-bys at bushy or isolated areas along highways.
