Further remand for freelance journalist

Freelance journalist Annie Mpalume was on 26 October 2009 further remanded out of custody to 14 December 2009 when she appeared before Mutare Magistrate Mr Fechete facing allegations of breaching the Protected Areas Act.


The allegations arise from her alleged unlawful entry into a protected area (Chiadzwa diamond fields in Manicaland) without a pass. Mpalume is being represented by Chris Ndlovu while the State was represented by Simon Chabuka.

Background

Mpalume was arrested on 8 October 2009 in Manicaland provinces Chiadzwa diamond fields on allegations of entering a protected area without a pass. Mpalume is a freelance journalist accredited by the now defunct statutory Media and Information Commission (MIC).

She was granted US$ 30 bail on 12 October 2009.
