Rights campaigner dies

HARARE - Keith Goddard, one of the most prominent champions of lesbian, gay men, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people's rights in Zimbabwe, died on Friday at St Anne's Hospital in Harare after a short illness.

Goddard joined the Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ), as a member in 1992 and was appointed programmes manager in 1996. In 2006 he rose to the position of director, a title he held until his death.

“During his life and time with GALZ, Keith was instrumental in highlighting the challenges experienced by LGBT people,” said a statement from GALZ. “Although of small stature he had a voice that commanded authority and silenced any room he was in. Keith dedicated his life to the advancement of LGBT rights, human rights and his passion for music.”

The international liaison office of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum said: “We offer our heartfelt condolences to Keith’s friends and family. May his soul rest in peace.”
