coltart_davidHARARE - The Ministry of Education is reportedly forcing schools around the country to contribute funds towards the purchase of vehicles for District Education Officers (DEO)s. (Pictured: Minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, David Coltart)

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) told The Zimbabwean that it had received cases of some officials from the ministry of Education who were asking schools to contribute towards the purchase of these vehicles.

They are asking each child to pay a dollar towards the purchase of vehicles for the DEOs. They are saying they want to buy these vehicles for all DEOs in the countrys districts, said Majongwe.

A chairman of the School Development Association (SDA) of a Mufakose school confirmed that they received a letter from the ministry asking them for the contributions.

We received a letter two weeks ago notifying us of the donations. They were asking us to pay US$ 5000 but we have resolved not to pay this money, said the Mufakose school representative who asked for anonymity.

Majongwe said they had since taken up the matter with the Minister of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture, David Coltart. We have brought his attention to this. We view this as nothing but extortion, said Majongwe. When contacted for a comment, Coltart, said: We are looking into that matter.
