COMESA speeds up borders

comesaBULAWAYO - The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has installed a transit data transfer module at Beitbridge border post to facilitate faster clearance of goods destined for member countries.

The data module is designed to ease exchange of transit declarations and transit guarantee information among customs administrations along a transit route. The main functionality of the tool is to allow automatic extraction and upload of transit declarations from any computerised customs system to the Comesa Web Server based at the Comesa Secretariat, the trade bloc said in a statement.

The data module will enable authorised users (traders, transporters and Customs officials) along a transit route to immediately access the transit declaration together with the Transit Carnet on the web server to view and download it to their computer, via the Internet, for further processing. The module was recently enhanced to incorporate viewing of the guarantee information as it appears in the Regional Customs Transit Guarantee System.
