Homelessness on the decrease

street_childrenHARARE - The number of street children in the capital has significantly decreased over the past six months, according to a local Non Governmental Organisation, Street Ahead.

A senior official of the organisation said that Street Ahead statistics showed that Harare and some surrounding areas like Ruwa, Norton and Chitungwiza had an estimated 700 street children. He attributed the decrease in the figures to the dollarisation of the economy which he said had made life on the streets almost unbearable because of limited spending power of the consumers.

“People now have little to spare and give out and this has generally driven children out of the streets, though some have gone back to their homes , most of them have migrated to South Africa probably in search of greener pastures,” he said.
