They were later seen parking three cars at Tsimba shopping centre in Rujeko high-density suburb, before driving off at high speed. In Rujeko, the Toyota was joined by a Nissan pick-up without number plates and a blue Mazda 323. People travelling in the cars were allegedly armed with pistols.
According to sources, the sudden random movement of vehicles in the town comes barely two weeks after members of the junta held a secret meeting at Grandchase Farm on the outskirts of Marondera. The meeting was attended by Major General Chedondo and top officials from the CIO, police, prisons service and other state security agents.
Only agents from factions loyal to Mugabe were invited, as suspicion and mistrust has grown within Zanu (PF). A top CIO operative and brother to minister Emmerson Mnangagwa is barred from attending junta meetings. There are fears that he would divulge deliberations to his brothers faction. In the past, the CIO and Mnangagwa used to attend Zanu (PF) and junta meetings at Zanu (PF) provincial headquarters in Marondera, said an inside source.
Recently, there were rumours that the junta had resolved to start abduction of MDC activists in the town. The abductions would be carried out in broad daylight to dissuade people from supporting the MDC.
Marondera used to be a strong Zanu (PF) base before the tables were turned in the elections. Zanu has vowed to fight tooth and nail until it gains back the Mashonaland East Provincial capital from the MDC.
