Makoni the fourth Anglican Bishop

MUTARE Founding National Merchant Bank (NMB) chief executive officer, Julius Makoni, was on November 22 consecrated and installed as the fourth Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Manicaland at a colourful ceremony held at the Mutare show grounds.


Retired reverend Abraham Chama, the Dean of the Province of Central Africa, and reverend Sebastian Bakare led the proceedings that were attended by hundreds of Anglicans.

Makoni thanked the Anglican Diocese of Manicaland in the Church Province of Central Africa for bestowing him such an honour.

I feel greatly humbled with this honour bestowed on me and having trust in me. I want to thank all the people for the support and I promise to work with all the people in the church, he said.

The Anglican Diocese of Manicaland (CPCA) was formed in October 1981 as what was then known as the diocese of Mashonaland.

Retired Bishop Elijah Masuku was the first bishop of the diocese. Upon his retirement in 1998, reverend Sabastian Bakare succeeded him.

Upon his retirement in 2006, Bakare was succeeded by Elson Jakazi who resigned on September 23, 2007.

Makoni who was forced to skip the country in 2004 after he was accused of externalising foreign currency, said he was looking forward to working in the district, for the people.
