Officer refuses Minister access

giles_mutsekwaBULAWAYO - Co-Home Affairs minister Giles Mutsekwa (Pictured) was temporarily barred from touring parts of Matabeleland North province recently by a senior police officer.

The officer claimed that Mutsekwa had not notified him in time so the Minister could have a police escort.

Mutsekwa was expected to conduct a familiarization tour of the province three weeks ago but sources said Senior Assistant Commissioner Edmore Veterai told Mutsekwa that he is not welcome in the province as he did not notify him on time.

When contacted for comment, Mutsekwa said Veterai told him that police officers in that region were busy at the time on anti-stock theft programmes and therefore could not accompany him during the familiarization tour.

According to police sources Veterai had vowed that he would never allow the MDC minister to visit the province. Veterai could not be reached for comment.

Mutsekwa eventually managed to go ahead with the tour last week, two weeks after he had been barred.
