According to PSL chairman Tapuwa Matangaidze the runners up would get US$25 000 for their efforts. Gunners, who started the season as rank outsiders surprised all and sundry when they laid their hands on the coveted trophy for the first time in only their second year in the topflight league after beating Dynamos 2-0 in a decisive league match at Rufaro Stadium two weeks ago.
Exciting winger Nathan Ziwini and top marksman Norman Maroto were the toast of the day as they scored a goal each for Gunners to win their maiden league title. That victory also handed coach Moses Chunga his first major silverware since he started his coaching career a decade ago.
For winning the league title, Gunners popularly known as Chando Kupisa by their supporters secured a ticket to play in the lucrative African Champions League next year. Gunners were presented with their trophy just before their final league match against Lengthens at Rufaro on Saturday.
Team manager Wellington Mupandare told The Zimbabwean onTuesday that apart from getting the winners cheque from the sponsors the team would also get hefty bonuses from management following their impressive triumph.
“The management has come up with bonuses for the whole team. The team did us proud. Everyone in the team is happy that we realised our objective. We set ourselves the target to win this year’s league title and we achieved it. What makes this victory so special is that we won the title with a game to spare after we beat Dynamos,” said Mupandare.
