HWANGE - Five men were brought before a magistrate for allegedly killing and eating a lion in Matabeleland North.Chrispen Mumpande, 37, Plaxidas Mumpande, 32, Ndubeko Mumpande, 30, Amon Talalamu Mulambo, 74, and Innocent Sibanda, 45, all from Siyanyanga village in Dete, appeared before Hwange Magistrate, Peter Tomupeyi Madibha for hunting without a permit.
On October 31, 2009 a woman from the Siyanyanga village in Dete was fetching water from a well when she came face to face with a lion. She ran to alert other villagers and it was then that the five men armed themselves and tracked the lion.
It is alleged that the men attacked the beast with stones and axes, before taking the carcass home to their families. The men admitted to the charges levelled against them and were remanded out of custody to December 2.
