According to the villagers they decided to pool together resources and labour to fix the potholed road after years of neglect by the rural district council that they said last repaired the road more than 10 years ago.

“I use my shovel and hole to fill the potholes as I do not have some suitable tools, the traffic flow in this road is high such that our efforts are fast being eroded as the potholes re-develop before we even cover a kilometer,” said one villager, Munyaradzi Mutepa.

Gladys Makanya, one of the villagers working on the road, appealed for assistance from the government. We would achieve more if the authorities recognised (our work) and at least assisted us with some cash, she said last week.

Some motorists and public transport operators in Sanyati who spoke to The Zimbabwean on Sunday urged the local authority to support the villagers with tools to use to repair the road.

“I think the local authority is letting both the villagers and motorists down as we want to make business in this area and the villagers need transport. They should at least capacitate these volunteers by providing them with some proper tools to use,” said a motorist Tafadzwa Mutenga.

A transport operator, Isdore Dhlamini, said: “Most public transport operators have since withdrawn their services from this place due to the bad state of the road, I am also considering withdrawing because I’m recording more loses than profits given that it takes us an average of five hours to cover a distance of only 70km from Kadoma to Arda.”

Efforts to get comment on the matter from the Mashonaland West provincial administrators office were fruitless.
