ZUJ election date finally set

votingwomanBULAWAYO - The much awaited Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) congress and elections will be held here on December 3, 2009.

The outgoing ZUJ president, Matthew Takaona, announced this week that over 60 delegates from the union’s branches were expected to attend the congress. “The congress comes at a time when the media in the country is expected to expand with the expected launch of the three daily newspapers following the formation of the inclusive government,” said Takaona.

He stressed that only branch secretaries and chairpersons were eligible to vote during the elections.

“Although any member is entitled to attend the congress the union will only sponsor branch secretaries and chairpersons. The congress will consolidate the gains of the union over the past four years. The congress will also take stock of the union’s performance during the past four years, he said. The president added that there was need to retain and elect new executive members for continuity within the union.

I am confident that the congress will come up with a new team comprising new and old executive members to ensure continuity within the union. I also hope that the issue of gender equality in the union will be adequately addressed,” he said.

During Takaona’s reign the union managed to, among other things, establish a secretariat and establish an office in Bulawayo. The last ZUJ elections were held in 2006 in Masvingo.
