This is the second time Arthur Mutambara has warned the US government to stop meddling in Zimbabwe’s affairs. “At the end of the day Zimbabwe’s future is in the hands of Zimbabweans and Zimbabweans must ask first what they can do to make their country successful before they ask others to do something about their country,” said Mutambara.
At the end of last week Ambassador Ray met with President Robert Mugabe. “I expressed to President Mugabe and to all others that I am here to talk to, and listen to, everyone,” said Ray.
Mutambara told ambassador Ray that he wanted so-called “sanctions” removed. The US envoy rejected that there were any sanctions on Zimbabwe, explaining that there were targeted restrictive measures affecting more than 200 senior officials of Mugabe’s party and some companies linked to these individuals.
There were fears in the diplomatic community that Ambassador Ray could fail to secure an “agreement” – permission from hosts to commence duties – after Harare had fierce run-ins with the previous ambassador, James McGee.
