Media must reform – ZYF

media_rightsMUTARE The Zimbabwe Youth Forum (ZYF) in Manicaland has told President Robert Mugabe, The Herald and ZBH to reform. In an interview with The Zimbabwean, the ZYF executive committee member, Patson Chirairo, said President Mugabes attempts to derail the media democracy would not be tolerated.

We want to know why Mugabe is not opening up the media space in this country. We know that Mugabe, through George Charamba (Media, Information and Publicity Permanent Secretary), is not willing to allow more newspapers, radio and television stations because they want to continue misinforming the nation and are afraid of the stiff competition from the private players in the media, he said.

We strongly condemn the gross media imbalances in the country. We want to embark on a movement that is set to resolve the hate speech and the atrocious operations of the State media, he said.

We strongly condemn the confusion and the unprofessional contact of Ministry of Media, Information and Publicity who are running that portfolio with Zanu (PF) machinations, he said.

We now call upon the inclusive government to quickly move towards the reformation of the media. We urge those unprofessional journalists at the state papers to immediately stop being used by Zanu (PF) to further its selfish agenda, said Chirairo.

Recent surveys carried out by Southern Africa Media Alliance (SAMA), an independent media watchdog, revealed that about 80 per cent of urban dwellers were now watching foreign television via satellite.
