Mugeyi appointed Carara Kicks coach

william_mugeyiJOHANNESBURG Former Zimbabwe international William Mugeyi (Pictured) has been thrust to the helm of promotion-chasing Carara Kicks to revive the South African First Division clubs dreams of playing in the countrys elite league.

The 40-year-old former Black Aces defender, who had an illustrious career in South Africa before hanging up his boots, was one of the ambitious clubs last-minute signings as the December transfer window period lapsed last week. According to the Premier Soccer League Mugeyi signed as coach for Carara Kicks from Vodacom League side Western Province United. At Kicks, where he is reunited with former Warriors teammate James Matola, the former Warriors skipper faces a formidable task of helping the team to gain promotion to the lucrative ABSA Premiership.

At the time of going to press the Free State-based club was fourth on the log standings, eight points behind Coastal Stream leaders Bay United who are on 26 points. The winners of the group qualify for the playoff against the winners of the Inland Stream to determine the team that gets immediate promotion to the ABSA Premiership. The losers of the match then play the team that finishes second-bottom in the ABSA Premiership. Mugeyi, twin brother to Ajax Cape Town assistant coach Wilfred, had a remarkable career with Umtata Bush Bucks in the South African Premier Soccer League and had more than 50 caps for the Zimbabwe senior national team.
