The International Human Rights Day is observed in honour of the United Nations General Assemblys adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on 10 December 1948.
The German rights award was given to Mukoko in recognition of her “steadfast engagement in fighting human rights abuses in Zimbabwe” as director of the faith-based non-governmental organisation, Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP). Since 2000 ZPP has uncovered and documented numerous human rights violations committed by suspected members of Zimbabwean security forces.
Mukoko was last year abducted and severely tortured by state security agents and later charged alongside other human rights activists with treason for allegedly plotting to overthrow President Robert Mugabe.
However the Supreme Court last September barred the Attorney Generals department from prosecuting Mukoko because her rights were violated when state agents abducted and tortured her.
