Newly crowned champs Gunners, CAPS United in battle for veteran keeper Gonese signature

goalkeeperHARARE-NEWLY crowned Zimbabwe champions Gunners and Harare giants CAPS United are involved in a fierce battle for the signature of Lengthens veteran goalkeeper Muzondiwa Gonese as the two teams start to beef up their squad in preparation for the African Safari.

Gonese was spotted in the company of CAPS United director Farai Jere at a local hotel on Saturday as they sought to thrash out a deal ahead of their CAF Confederations Cup tournament. This follows reports that they could be losing goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda who is linked with a move to Zambian Premier League club Zesco United.

Contacted for comment Gonese confirmed CAPS United’s interest in his signature. He, however, said they had not agreed anything yet as negotiations were still ongoing. “There is nothing at the moment because we are still discussing. I have other offers as well from teams like Gunners and so it depends on who puts a better offer on the table. The negotiations are still going on,” he said.

CAPS United team manager Wilson Mutekede confirmed that they were discussing with the veteran goalkeeper but declined to disclose the further details. Gonese has seen duty with Masvingo United and former Zimbabwe champions Monomotapa.

Gonese, who was suspended by Lengthens management over alleged reports of match fixing after he was seen coming out of Jere’s office ahead of their league clash with CAPS United had a stellar season with The Happy People and was a favourite to land the Goalkeeper of the tournament award but was disqualified on disciplinary grounds.

Rules of selecting soccer stars are clear that any player who has been brought before a club, ZIFA, PSL disciplinary hearing or has been brought before a court of law is not eligible for the awards.

Gonese’s name featured prominently from a special panel of football writers as they selected the outstanding players for the just ended season in Kwekwe. But, he was disqualified because he was brought before his club’s disciplinary committe.
