State challenges Gwezeres bail

judgementHARARE The Attorney Generals Office has lodged an application to challenge the release on bail of MDC transport manager, Pasco Gwezere.

The application was lodged this week by Chief Law officer Michael Mugabe.

Gwezere was abducted and imprisoned for allegedly stealing 20 AK-47 rifles from Pomona Army Barracks. He was granted US$500 bail two weeks ago, but the State immediately invoked Section 121 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act, which meant he had to stay in remand for a further seven days.

The seven days finished last Friday but Gwezere is still in prison with no access to medical attention for the injuries he sustained when he was abducted.

Gwezere has been accused of stealing firearms from Pomona Barracks and receiving military training in Uganda 10 years ago. The military training charge has already been thrown out by the magistrates court.

Gwezeres lawyer, Alec Muchadehama, has challenged the prison authorities to respect the ruling three weeks ago to allow his client to receive medical attention.
