Birth certificate dilemma

mother_child_zimHARARE - Mothers with children born in the Diaspora are struggling to secure birth certificates for their children as the Registration Office is demanding documents from the country of birth. (Pictured: Mothers struggle to register children born outside Zimbabwe)

“I had my baby in South Africa and lived there for more than a year. I decided to come back with the child, but I was told that I had no reference that my child was born in South Africa, said one mother. Life for the mothers who had their children in the Diaspora is made more difficult because many of them fled the economic meltdown without passports. This meant that they were unable to register their children in foreign countries.

However, with the right money a birth certificate can be bought regardless of where the child was born. Unfortunately not all women can part with US$100 to register their children.

Without a birth certificate a child cannot be enrolled at school.
