The alleged kingpin of the counterfeit ring, 35-year-old Archibold Simbarashe Zulu, was arrested having been found with US$50,000 in fake notes.
The police estimate that the counterfeiters have put thousands of US dollars into circulation over the past year.
The notes have surfaced mainly in Harare, Bulawayo and other large towns. The majority that turn up are produced by foreigners, and police say the quality is generally high.
Police have said they will take strong steps to stop the criminal activity. The Zimbabwean heard that police had mobilised forces from many departments, including those responsible for crimes in finance, social security, and frontier defence, to investigate counterfeit-related crimes and hunt down fugitives.
