MDC suffers media onslaught

john_makumbe_familyHARARE - University of Zimbabwe Political Scientist, John Makumbe (Pictured), has urged the MDC to counter Zanu (PF) abuse of state media by increasing the distribution of the Prime Ministers Newsletter.

Speaking last week during civic organisations assessment of the Inclusive Government, Makumbe said that Zanu (PF) continued to use the state media to distribute its propaganda and demonise leaders of the MDC. “The MDC has been abused by the state media,” said Makumbe. Makumbe added that the MDC should take the Prime Ministers weekly report to ZBC whether it is broadcast or not and said that waiting for radio stations such as Radio VOP, Studio 7 was not enough.

In spite of the presence of the coalition government, the state media has remained pro Zanu (PF). The party’s prodigal son, Jonathan Moyo, and former media hangman, Tafataona Mahoso, are given unlimited space in The Herald and The Sunday Mail to demonise the character of government ministers such as Minister of Finance Tendai Biti and Nelson Chamisa the Minister of Technology.

While the media welcomed the setting up of the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) that will license newspapers, it is too early to pop champagne bottles since the commissioners are yet to be sworn in by President Robert Mugabe.
