Mob justice for brothers

xenophobic_attacksPRETORIA - Two Zimbabwean brothers are counting themselves fortunate to be alive after an angry mob of their compatriots inflicted Mbare style, instant justice on the pair.

Brighton and Shakira Chimukongo were severely assaulted in Pretoria last week by a livid group of fellow immigrants, who accused the two of a series of thefts.

The Zimbabwean witnessed a rare demonstration of mob violence, as the brothers were struck with clenched fists, booted feet and a hammer leaving them bleeding profusely.

One of the assailants, Kudakwashe Chizema, was briefly detained by the South African Police Service in Mamelodi East. The brothers were dissuaded from pressing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

These rascals crossed the border with bad intentions. They broke into the house of a widow who has gone back home for the holiday. We should have killed them, shouted one irate man identified only as Madzibaba.

The brothers have been discharged from the Mamelodi hospital, where they were treated for multiple injuries, under police guard. They made a brief appearance before Mamelodi magistrate last week.
