Mother of activist hunts for son

MARONDERA - Fina Betera, the mother of an abducted MDC youth activist, Kainosi Betera (24), has refused to give up hope in the search to find her son.

Kainosi was abducted by Zanu (PF) thugs and CIO agents on May 22, 2008 at his family home in Nyameni. Most people believe MDC activists abducted in the run up to presidential

elections of 29 June 2008 are dead by now, but Fina Betera does not. She spends most of her time visiting Zanu (PF) official’s houses, pleading with them to release Kainosi. Rumours abound that Kainosi was abducted and driven off in a truck allegedly driven by a council employee, Cephas Nzuma, and later shot dead by a war veteran identified as Mashayamombe. His body was then tied to a stone and dumped in Wenimbe dam. Before being killed, Kainosi was allegedly detained for a week at Hurudza house, the CIO provincial headquarters. He was a brave district youths organizing secretary.

“I have almost suffered a stroke because of stress regarding the whereabouts of my son. I remain optimistic that one day Kainosi will resurface alive. If however he was assassinated, I remain anxious to know how he was killed. Did they submerge his body in sulphuric acid, maybe they beat him until he died or could they have shot him dead?” his mother said.

Following the abduction, the Betera family has struggled for survival. The mother attempts to put food on her familys table through a profitless vegetable market in the suburb. Kainosi’s younger brothers have been expelled from school due to failure to pay school fees. Residents have called on the MDC to establish a welfare fund, to benefit families like the Beteras.
