Zimbabwe lost 0-3 to the FIFA 2010 World Cup hosts after a disjointed second half performance when the hastily assembled Warriors squad, featuring mainly South African based players and those plying their trade in Zimbabwe, began to tire and lose concentration.
Chidzambwa, the countrys most successful coach at both club and national team level after leading Dynamos to the finals of the African Champions League in 1998 and taking the Warriors to their maiden appearance at the AFCON finals in 2004, told reporters in the South African port city of Durban that they should not read too much into the result against Bafana Bafana.
Preparations are going well as we have long-term plans. We are building a team for the 2012 AFCON Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Chidzambwa said at a post-match press conference. He told reporters that they should not read too much into the result against Bafana Bafana as his team did not consist of seasoned professionals based in Europe.
We are on track as presently we are only using local and South African based players, when the European based players join us we will be stronger.
Chidzambwa, a former tough-as-teak defence pillar for the Warriors and Harare glamour club Dynamos, blamed the humiliation by Bafana Bafana to a couple of second half blunders by his defenders. We played well in the first half but then went on to concede two silly goals in the second half, but we learn from our mistakes, he said.
The Warriors appear to be still suffering from the hangover of their COSAFA Senior Challenge success last and year have performed below par since winning the tournament. They put on a dismal performance in the CECAFA Senior Challenge in December before conceding the three second half goals last week at Moses Mabhida Stadium that earned South Africa a rare win over their northern neighbours.
