Youth trust helps the needy

MACHEKE - A local youth organisation, Youth Development and AIDS Trust, (YODAT) recently distributed sanitary pads to secondary school girls at Nyazema High School here.

The exercise was aimed at improving female hygiene as most of the girls come from poor farming families in the area. Besides catering for the needs of school children, our organisation helps empower single parents, the girl child and other less privileged members of the community. At present we are running a Save My Community campaign. Our programs empower and keep the community busy on progressive projects. Macheke has no industry and entertainment. This leaves the community with one option, prostitution, said an executive member of the Trust, Danuel Duwati.

The campaign develops youth members through training in various self-help skills. To motivate members of the community, locals who have achieved success in various fields such as sport, education, business and others are given awards annually. A teacher who assisted the development of education in Nyazema town ship, Mandizha, was given an award by YODAT posthumously.

The Trust was formed by local youths in 2006 and has already empowered and assisted hundreds of local members of the community.
