At the moment, there is only one television channel in Zimbabwe that has been labelled by many as biased towards Zanu (PF). Just before Christmas, Happison Muchechetere, the Chief Executive Officer of ZBC promised the nation that the much awaited second television station would be launched on Christmas Day.
“We are still trying to equip the studios and also find the personnel,” said a source at the ZBC. When contacted for comment Muchechetere, who has in the past said that he does not talk to The Zimbabwean, said that the paper was trying to disturb the digitalization programme.
Despite the fact that the Unity Government has been in office for almost a year now ZBC has not stopped its pro Zanu (PF) coverage. Many Zimbabweans are doubtful that the launch of the second television channel under ZBC will benefit Zimbabweans and improve programming.
Last year the principals in the inclusive Government announced the names of the commissioners in the Zimbabwe Media Commission, but they are still to be sworn-in by President Robert Mugabe who is on leave and is expected back in February.
