Artisans anticipate NAMA

namaHARARE - Zimbabwe's art community is celebrating with tributes, rehearsals, and, of course, parties in anticipation of the

ninth edition of National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) which will be held February 20 at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale.

Just one more week to go and we will find out who will be taking the NAMA awards, and who will be returning home empty handed. Until then, lets have a look at the criteria used to arrive at the nominations.

There are 80 A-list artist nominees, and organisers say being nominated for a NAMA never gets old.

The awards are being held under the theme ‘Together As One.’

Members of the public are encouraged to cast their electronic votes in all sector categories: Music, Visual Arts, Dance, Film & Television, Theatre and Literary Arts. The council will release voting modalities in due course, officials have said.

It will be back-to-back star power at the NAMA, which will be broadcast on on live television. Organisers usually keep the list of performers close to their chest, but they did reveal two special guest names – Culture Spears from Botswana, and the Kabanana TV soap cast from Zambia. Both groups will grace this year’s NAMA.

Officials say the event will be strictly by invitation, and no gatecrashers.
