MUTARE Ever-rising prices of building materials are setting back efforts by local people to build their homes.Most people in the city are renting houses, as the former Zanu (PF) government failed to fulfil its promise to provide decent shelter for all citizens by year 2010.
City of Mutare Housing Director Stenard Mapurisa said the bulk of land they sold remained undeveloped.
Said Mapurisa: Increasing prices of building material could derail plans by 5,900 prospective land-owners to build their houses.
Mapurisa called on the government to monitor prices in the construction to ensure they remained at levels low-income earners could afford.
