Cattle-grabber has his cattle grabbed

MARONDERA - The tables seem to have turned for a Zanu (PF) senator, Sydney Sekeramayi, whose cattle were stolen recently.

Sekeramayi acquired a herd of 500 cattle when he grabbed Baker Farm from a white commercial farmer at the height of the land invasions. Now, though, Colin Boka (31), Stephen Masiyazi (25), Knowledge Zaranyika (29) and Frank Masiye (22) have appeared before a regional magistrate, facing charges of stealing 47 cattle valued at $30,800 from Sekeramayis farm.

Residents are questioning the legitimacy of Sekeramayis ownership of the cattle, as commercial farmers are disputing the seizure of their farms.

Where is Sekeramayi drawing legitimacy to claim ownership of cattle he stole from some former white commercial farmers? asked one elderly resident. Though the complainant is addressed as Shungu Sekeramayi, it is Sydney Sekeramayi who is attending the court case. Residents say the Zanu (PF) senator is appearing at the courts under the name Shungu to divert public attention from the trial.
