Chunga attends coaching clinic

chungaHARARE - Controversial coach Moses "Bambo" Chunga (pictured) who is on record saying he does not attend local coaching courses because they teach elementary staff like ball control and passing is one of the participants at the latest high level FIFA coaching course underway in Harare.

The reigning coach of the year, who won the league title with Gunners after beating Dynamos to the finishing line in a close race last season played his football in Belgium after starring for Dynamos and was also the captain of the Warriors in his hey day.

Chunga who has probably made as many friend as enemies during his long career, has clashed with the Zimbabwe Soccer Coaches Association (ZISCA) because he does not hold any recognized coaching certificate but has refused to attend coaching clinics in the country saying he has nothing to learn from the courses because they teach basic football skills.

The ZISCA last year unsuccessfully tried to bar Chunga from coaching in the premier league on the grounds that he did not have the prerequisite coaching qualifications to coach in the top flight division.

But the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) intervened to save Chungas day, telling the coaches association to allow the former national team star player to coach because he has amassed wide experience and knowledge of the game during his long career at home and in Europe which he could impart to young footballers.

ZIFA chief executive Henrietta Rushwaya confirmed that Chunga was taking part in the FIFA-funded course.

The course is part of FIFAs legacy programme which intends to bring a long-lasting development legacy in Africa and Chunga is one of the coaches invited to take part

in the course. He is a national team coach and is representing the Mighty Warriors. Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambwa is also part of those taking part in the course, said Rushwaya.

Chunga who is now at Shooting Stars guided Gunners to the league title after beating Harare giants Dynamos to the challenge. The league title also handed him his first major silverware since he started his coaching career a decade ago. The normadic reigning coach of the year has coached several clubs starting as an assistant at Black Aces.

He also coached Hackney, Arcadia United, Shabanie Mine, Black Rhinos, Dynamos, Shooting Stars and CAPS United. The high-level FIFA-funded workshop, which started on Monday ends on February 20.
