HEP project to reduce load shedding

tea_plantations_eastern_highlandsEASTERN HIGHLANDS - A three mega watts power station is set to be commissioned here this month in a bid to ease load shedding in the area. (Pictured: The tea plantations set to benefit from the power project.)

The hydro electricity power project is situated on Nyangura dam, which runs across the Wamba-Zindi tea plantations. Business at the tea plantations is constantly disrupted by persistent load shedding by the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA). This prompted the company to seek alternative ways of solving problems emanating from the power outages, said a top company official who said he had no authority to speak to the media.

Droughts are not a threat to the project, as water supplies continuously ooze from mountains and rocks near Zindi. Besides providing plantations with a reliable supply of power, communities surrounding the estates will also benefit from the project, as their homesteads schools and clinics are set to be electrified. Three other power projects are in the pipeline. They are proposed to be located at Nyawamba dam, Chipote and Nyawamba rivers.
