Lack of funds hampers tourism projects

VUMBA Tourism players here have said that lack of investment is hampering the development of community-based tourism in the province and the country as a whole.

The Manicaland Tourism Board director for research and product development, George Matondo, told The Zimbabwean that most community-based tourism operators lacked funds to develop and market their products. He said the growth of the sub-sector had, as a result, been painfully slow over the years, and that, due to low investment levels in the sub-sector, focus at the moment was being placed on consolidating projects instead of starting new ones.

He said the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) should develop a toolkit for small to medium enterprises in the tourism sector to help them improve management skills and product quality.

Among the projects registered with the ZTA in Manicaland are Matendera ruins in Buhera, Vhimba wilderness, the Gairezi project and Damascus centre.
