MDC SA Celebrates the Inclusive Government anniversary with mixed feelings

mdc_regaliaWhen we effectively went into bed with Zanu PF last year exactly this time, we had two hopes....

Our eyes were fixed on reviving the economy of Zimbabwe and to bring civil liberties

As we look back to the year behind us, we are unable to either celebrate or mourn.

Why?

On the economic front, we scored huge success. This might not be as much as we anticipated, but improving peoples quality of life has always been MDCs primary objective.

For the first time in 10 years the people of Zimbabwe had a good Christmas in December 2009, with food on the table.

Before we formed the government with Zanu PF civil servants was earning less than R5 a month. Yes, R5! Their take home was not even enough to take them home. Grocery shops had closed. There was no any form of food on the market. Only Zanu PF chefs cars were in the road. Everyone had parked their cars except for those with relatives in Diaspora. The general populace had been virtually sentenced to abject poverty. The dollarisation of the Zimbabwe economy turned around the pathetic situation into hope. Civil servants are now earning between US$140 to US$200 and this is all courtesy of the MDC.

We however did not achieve much in our efforts to democratize Zimbabwe. This is because our partner in the inclusive government, Zanu PF continued to apply brakes on all democratic processes. Zanu PF continued to political harass MDC ministers, leaders, MPS and supporters. Zanu PF refused to implement the Global Political Agreement to the full. The former gorillas continued to mistake the national treasury as their own family fortunes. The constitutional making process is still being dogged by Zanu PF disturbances. The Attorney General Johannes Tomana, is still illegally occupying the office in clear contravention of the dictates of the Global Political Agreement. The Reserve bank Governor, Gedion Gono is still presiding over the monitory issues of Zimbabwe without the blessings of the Global political Agreement.

However with acrimony still shooting-up from the government building but we managed to keep the government in place for the benefit of the electorate.
