John had won his seat against what many prior to the election had perceived as uncompromising odds, against Patrick Chinamasa, the Justice Minister, in the 2008 elections. Sadly, John passed away on November 7, 2009 in a road traffic accident. He is survived by his wife, five children and six grandchildren.
The Memorial Day started with Roman Catholic mass and the community hall was jam packed with many standing at the rear. The service was conducted in Shona, both the liturgy and music, drums and rattles and all, and it felt like home away from home.
In his sermon, the presiding priest, Fr Chiona, said he didnt know John, but now felt as if he did. He said that if the crowd was anything to go by, he was a good man
There was an outpouring of eulogies from people from all walks of life. A John Nyamande Foundation was launched on the day whose format and mission will be unfolded in due course.
A highlight of the days program was his widows testimony where she read Hebrews 13:16: Dont forget to do good and to share what you have with those in need, for such sacrifices are very pleasing to God. To many in the packed hall, and no doubt to his former constituents in Makoni Central, that verse summarized John Nyamandes life story. Deservedly, let that be his epitaph.
