Colonel Garira has been replaced by Colonel Chris Sibanda. Pomona Barracks is officially known as The Zimbabwe National Army Engineers Corps. Military sources told The Zimbabwean on Sunday that Garira was being offloaded after ‘he failed to ensure maximum security at the barrack’. The new Pomona Barracks commander, Colonel Chris Sibanda immediately issued threats against his unit when he assumed command on Wednesday. “I do not demand a lot from you, all I want is a high standard of discipline, teamwork, loyalty, dedication and professionalism. Our image is already dented after the unfortunate incident that happened last year at this camp but I still believe we can still retain that good image,” Sibanda is asaid to have told his subordinates.
After the break in to the armoury at Pomona, there was fear and anxiety within the military and Zanu (PF) that middle ranking officers were preparing to either stage a coup or eliminate hardline elements in the military and Zanu (PF) opposed to the full implementation of the Global Political Agreement. Junior and middle ranking officers in the military say they continue to bear the brunt of economic hardships caused by refusal on the part of Zanu PF to fully implement the GPA, which is regarded as the only viable option to improve the lives of Zimbabweans.
Following the theft of the military hardware, several soldiers were tortured to death by officers from military intelligence as part of ‘investigations’.
